1997 SEASON

Introductory Notes: The following page contains the daily schedule of events for the Ocean Park Association summer season as of May 3, 1997 when it was last revised.

Changes will be incorporated here as it becomes possible and in a flyer - This Week in Ocean Park -published in Ocean Park every Friday throughout the summer season. Copies of the flyer are available at the rear of the Temple, which is open every morning for meditation and visiting, and in the Post Office lobby outside the Ocean Park Association office.

The 1997 Program Booklet, from which this schedule was taken is available now. The 1997 Program Booklet has been printed and sent to members of the Ocean Park Association. Non - members can pick up a copy of the booklet at the Ocean Park Post Office or you can have one sent to your home for $3.00 to cover shipping and handling costs. This daily schedule shows only the day and time and category for movies. Film selections for the summer will be made throughout the Spring. Movie flyers containing film titles and running time for July will be published by the end of May and for August by the end of June.

• 7:00 pm Family Game Night at the Rec Hall. Everyone is welcome. $1.00 for non-members. Come and get acquainted and enjoy a game with your children until 9:00 pm.

Friday, July 4  

• 8:00 am Bicycle Decorating contest at the Rec Hall. Prizes for four age categories: tots to 4,5 to 7, 8 to 10, and 11 and up. You may come and decorate your bike at the Rec Hall with our supplies, or you may bring it already decorated. All entrants MUST be registered with the Rec Director by 8:45 am. Judging will be at 9:00 am. All entrants may ride in the parade. Prizes will be awarded at the Bell Tower during the Band Concert. Registration Fee: $1.00 donation.
• 9:00 am Assembly Committee Tag Day to support the Canada / USA festival activities. Tags and balloons will be sold before and during the parade, as well as at the band concert which follows.
• 10:00 am Forty-eighth Independence Day Community Parade. Line of march open to entrants of all ages (costumes encouraged). The parade, led by the color guard and the Ocean Park Band forms on Temple Avenue, beginning at the Bell Tower and lining up opposite Porter Hall. The Ocean Park Historical Society invites interested persons to wear a period costume, tribal or international costume for a One World theme, joining behind the banner of the Ocean Park Historical Society (see Clint Condict). Co-Marshals of the parade are Duane Gorham and Bud Allanson. There will be free popsicles for all young parade participants, courtesy of Spence's Variety.
• 10:45 am Concert at The Bell Tower by the Ocean Park Band, directed by Dan Evans, assisted by the Koncert Kazoo Band.
• 11:00 am Art Show, sponsored by the members of The Art Center at Ocean Park, Library Lawn from 11:00 am -4:00 pm.
• 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Celebrations will culminate with Community Line and Square Dancing in the Square. This will be a pre - fireworks event.  

Saturday, July 5

• 8:30 am to 11:00 am Eleventh Annual Family Sandcastle Competition, on the beach from Randall to Ancona. Rules available in the Ocean Park post office after Memorial Day, or at the site. The theme is "Holiday Magic". There is a contest chairperson on the beach the day of the event. You must first locate this person to register (no charge) and to receive a location to build in. Times for registration and judging will be announced in the "Sandcastle flyer" and in "This Week in Ocean Park" as well. Judging will have to take place before the tide reaches the sculptures. Even if you or your family have not entered, you will still want to come down to view the works of art before the tide washes them away.

• 7:30 pm Sing-A-Long at The Temple, under the direction of Stewart Shuster and featuring the Ocean Park Band, Dan Evans, Bandmaster. There is no admission charge, a free-will offering will be taken.

Monday, July 7

• 9:30 am Vacation Bible School for ages 4 - 11, sponsored by the Educational Bureau, Jordan Hall. Classes held Monday-Friday, 9:30-11:30 am. Closing service on Friday. No registration fee. Wendy White, Leader.
• TBD Temple Bells rehearsal, daily, The Temple. See Stewart Shuster, Music Director, for further details, especially if you are a newcomer and interested in joining.
• 10:00 am Car Wash at the Rec Hall until noon. Help support this fund raiser for Ocean Park's youth programs. Advance tickets $4.00. Day of the event $5.00. (No games today)

  We live in a world vibrant with Spirit, just as did those who were contemporaries of Jesus. The beckoning of God's Spirit is just as real today as in any other age. Amidst the constant clamor and clutter, how do we distinguish what we feel and hear? Are we open to God's present invitations? Are we willing to act on what we feel?

  
  This July Evening Watch series will consist of four reflections on recognizing and claiming our call.

• 7:00 pm The 18th Annual Arts Festival of the Adult Fellowship, The Salvation Army, Jakeman Hall opens with a concert by the OOB Citadel Band. The exhibit will be open daily until 8:00 pm, no admission, closing on Monday, July 14.
• 7:00 pm Ocean Park Historical Society business meeting, Porter Hall.
• 8:00 pm Ocean Park Historical Society, Porter Hall. "Flight to Glory: Aviation History at Old Orchard Beach," (illustrated) by Dick Burns. This program is supported, in part, by the Maine Humanities Council's Century Project, "Modern Times in America, 1890-1930." The video, "The Great Air Race of 1924" (60 minutes) will be shown after an intermission for those who wish to stay. This is a documentary with lots of live footage shot by the US Army of aviation's first "round the world flight."

• 4:00 pm July Beach Vespers at the foot of Temple Avenue, on the beach. The Temple Brass will accompany the hymn singing.
• 7:30 pm Sunday Night at the Temple featuring major cast members and apprentices from the Portland Opera Repertory Theatre (PORT). This will be the third year that PORT Artistic Director Bruce Hangen and his cast members will visit Ocean Park, this time with highlights from Puccini's "Tosca". The performers will also sing arias and ensembles from other operas in the standard repertory. Admission: Adults - $5, Children 6 to 18 -$2, 5 and under free.

• 7:30 pm Sunday Night at the Temple featuring violinist Matthew Szemela, accompanied by Deb Raszmann. Matthew is a 17 year old wunderkind, a senior at Cheverus High School in Portland and a summer student at Meadowmount School of Music in New York. His dazzling technique at a young age has already earned him solo spots with several orchestras, including the Bangor Symphony and the Kiev Chamber Orchestra. The film, 81 minutes long, features the radio character, Seth Parker, who was played by Phillips Lord for many years. The story is loaded with scenes from the "good old days."
